About this piece

An outdoor light that charges through the day and switches itself on at dusk — no wiring back to the house and no plug to run. What makes it worth having is consistency — the same behaviour on the tenth use as on the first, with no break-in period and nothing to get used to.

Materials and build

Built from parts that each do one job, with the fastenings sized to the load rather than to the price. There is no glue in the joints that matters, nothing is torqued past what the material wants, and the piece can be taken apart if it ever has to be stored flat.

Sizing, fixings and what you get

Heat is kept away from the parts that age badly: the driver sits clear of the enclosure wall, and the lens is set proud of the body so the light leaves at a wide angle without a hard ring at the edge. The wiring runs through a sealed gland at the housing rather than past a bare hole, which is the one detail that decides whether an outdoor light survives its first wet season. Connections are polarity-marked, and the run between units is on enough cable to reach a sensible spacing rather than being just long enough for one layout.

How the charging really behaves

A freestanding solar light with its own panel on top, sized to be staked, wall-mounted or stood on a surface. We would rather it be slightly plainer than slightly flimsy. So the shape is quiet, the corners are radiused rather than sharp for looks, and the material is chosen for how it behaves on the hundredth use rather than the first. The detail we spent the most time on is the one you notice least until it is missing. That is usually how it works with anything that gets handled daily: the failures are quiet ones, and they show up on the parts nobody photographed.

Getting the most out of it outdoors

It is sized for ordinary rooms and ordinary hands rather than for a showroom. Set it up in one sitting, and if you move it six months later, nothing will have seized or gone brittle in the meantime. It needs no special setup: unbox it, put it where you want it, and it works. The packaging is designed to be kept for storing the piece out of season, which matters with anything that has small parts.

How we would wear it

  1. Along a path edge

Even spacing reads as a deliberate line rather than scattered points.

  2. On a fence or wall

The bracket avoids drilling into render where a post will do.

  3. Facing the day's sun

Angle the panel towards the brightest part of the sky, not straight up.

  4. Left out all year

The housing is built for outdoor use; check the connections at the start of each season.

Care

Clean with a damp cloth and avoid harsh chemicals, which dull the finish without getting anything cleaner. Store it dry and it will look the same in three years as it does on the day it arrives.

Questions we get asked

It needs daylight rather than full sun. A bright but shaded spot will still charge it, just more slowly, which shortens the running time after dusk.

Output drops in short, overcast days — that is a property of solar, not of this unit. Expect fewer hours per night rather than none.

Yes. The cell is removable on this unit, so the light does not have to be thrown away when the cell eventually loses capacity.
